and then i read this and suddenly felt a rant coming on...

Now there's a "credible" opinion if i ever heard one. As a matter of fact, this is a classic example of the cascade effect. Credible scientists refusing to jump on the bandwagon quickly enough have not only suffered from the cascade effect, but have been threatened with everything from losing grants to having their credentials revoked. Most of the brave souls left standing in the debate are either retired or independently wealthy. None are listened to however, thanks to the conscientious efforts of the mainstream media to suppress and discredit their research.
"There is some debate as to what will occur with global warming, but that does not mean that it is not real, merely that we do not understand it completely. "
And is there ANY debate as to what will occur when we get down to business and conscientiously recycle our paper and plastic, trade in our SUV's for horses, and cut up our blue jeans for attic insulation? Will that stop global warming and heal Mother Earth, or will we have to take the next giant step and shut down all our cities, power plants, interstate highways and factories to insure the continued safety of the planet? Will it even make a dent? What would it actually take to appease the weening greenbat conscience and allow little children to sleep soundly at night without worrying about how to save the earth, I wonder.
I haven't heard any cogent answers to these burning questions from the peanut gallery, ever. Because the real answer is: Nothing but money. Nothing short of Green (trillions and trillions of $$$) will ever appease the insanity of the Global Warming Alarm Company. mark my words. we have only seen the very tip of the algore iceberg. In the meantime, every pretentious, self-righteous zealot has a reason to congratulate themselves every time they wear hemp or add garbage to the compost pile.
I'm telling you, it's the New Religion. And this set of Pharisees is as hypocritical and self-serving as they come. Ask any politician or scientist to go ahead, dare to disagree with any global warming advocate and see how long it takes to be branded a moron, insane, dangerous, ignorant, etc. or today's equivalent of "crucify him! crucify him!" The "cascade effect" would be the least of their worries.

Global Warming and al-Qaida…what do they have in common? Hint: we must be protected from them.
Is the earth warming? Maybe. The earth’s weather fluctuates to extremes over time. So what? Will we have to beat a hasty retreat to Mexico with the glaciers at our heels if we don’t use those twisty florescent lights? Umm….
Are Islamic terrorist dangerous? Very. Some Humans are incredibly evil. So what? Is some asshole in a cave running a worldwide network of butchering sleeper cells who will force America into doing Mohamed’s bidding? Umm….
Tree-huggers and neocons both seem to be motivated by carefully orchestrated nightmares composed by those who can offer nothing more than protection from their worst dreams. Islamic terror is as real as the Ice Age but fear mongers exaggerate the danger to America…Western Society.
I believe we are being fed a lot of crap by both sides that magnify the possibility of dangers to the maximum degree in order to continue /obtain power.
The real danger is that there is no one who proposes to govern us through higher human aspirations. Why does every problem we face have to threaten our very existence?
In the back of his novel "State of Fear" Michael Crichton made the observation that within a month after the fall of the Soviet empire, there was a noticeable paradigm shift in mainstream media news reporting. Words such as "alarming", "catastrophic", and "emergency" began appearing at 200-300 times their previous usage.
The threat that had held a generation in fear was suddenly removed. Global destruction was no longer the imminent possibility it once was. Whether the subsequent attempts by the media, science, and politicians to fill this fear-void were orchestrated or not is something we may never know.
Those of us who are old enough remember the zero population people, the scientists who told us we were facing the next great Ice Age, Rachel Carson, and all the rest of the fear-mongers.
We have to ask ourselves why. Why are there some powers that be intent on keeping us in a state of fear? What is the desired outcome? How does an individual's fearful worldview benefit the rulemakers?
If an average Joe Schmoe person is thinking the world could end any second, wouldn't they be more likely to do whatever they feel like doing? Like, tune out, drop out, have fun, not go to work... the world would turn into a bunch of hippies, Jesus freaks and Hare Krsna ppl.
But if a person is thinking the planet is on the edge of destruction, but we can DO something about it - well then you get the conscientious greenbat weenie proletariat.
